Gestalt Therapy
Through the skilful use of a variety of experiential methods gestalt therapy helps to free energy locked in old dysfunctional behaviour patterns. Client’s can undo these patterns and reorganise themselves in a way that allows them to live more fully.
Gestalt therapy does not focus on talking about the client’s past, while the past is not neglected, importance is focused on the present moment and how this is impacting the client’s life. It’s not what happened then, but how it effects them now.
Gestalt therapy’s therapeutic relationship is the therapy, systematically relational in its underlying theory and methodology, without it there is no coherent core of gestalt therapy theory. Gestalt therapy theory provides a very rich ground and precious tool for which to understand human suffering. More specifically, suffering and pain are deep human experiences that demand attention - and can be transformed into new forms within the context of Gestalt therapy.
The Gestalt Cycle of Experience:
A pathway to awareness and authentic living.
The Gestalt cycle of experience outlines the process we go through from the moment we become aware of a need or desire to the point of fulfilling it. This cycle can be broken down into six key stages:
Sensation – the beginning of awareness.
Awareness – moving into consciousness.
Mobilisation – preparing for action.
Action - stepping into the world.
Contact – engaging fully.
Satisfaction/withdrawal – completing the cycle.
Each stage plays a vital role in helping us navigate the complex interactions between our inner world and our external environment. Interruptions in this cycle, such as avoidance, overthinking, or emotional repression, can lead to unfinished business, emotional distress, or unmet needs. When we understand this process, we can become more mindful of where we get stuck and learn how to move through the cycle more effectively.
